EFT was developed by Gary Craig as an alternative to TFT (Thought Field Therapy) by Dr. Roger Callahan who stumbled across it while trying to assist a client who a phobia of water.

He had just returned from a program on acupuncture, meridian points, and oriental medicine. He suggested she tap on certain energy points to restore energy flow while thinking about water.
Nothing else had worked after years of attempts; so, he figured “Why not?”
